Democratic Rep. Al Green was ousted from the House chamber after disrupting President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress. Only a few minutes into the speech, Green rose from his seat and yelled, “Mr. President, you don’t have a mandate!” in response to suggested cuts to Medicaid, a health program for low-income Americans.
Before Green could go on, his voice was drowned out by Republican lawmakers shouting “U-S-A!” in response. House Speaker Mike Johnson promptly called for security to escort Green out of the chamber.
Talking to the media afterwards, Green defended his actions. He explained that he was willing to face any punishment and reiterated that Medicaid reductions would affect millions of Americans. He also declared that he was drawing up articles of impeachment against Trump, as he claimed that the president lacked the right to impose such severe policy measures.
This was not the first time Green had clashed with Trump. Throughout Trump’s first term, Green was among the first Democrats to demand impeachment, citing issues with Trump’s leadership and policies.
Democrats Protest Trump’s Policies
Green’s ejection was part of a broader protest by Democrats against Trump’s policies. Although he was the sole lawmaker to be ejected, others expressed their opposition through silent but effective gestures.
Numerous Democratic women dressed in pink dresses to bring attention to issues of increasing expenses disproportionately impacting women. Other legislators dressed in yellow and blue ties, representing their solidarity with Ukraine, since Trump had just announced a halt on U.S. military assistance to the nation.
During the speech, some Democrats carried “false” signs whenever Trump made statements they did not agree with. This was a sign of increasing frustration with his policies, particularly on healthcare and foreign aid.
Medicaid reductions were a primary concern. Democrats contend that the program, which insures millions of people’s healthcare, needs to be expanded, not cut back. Trump has maintained that Medicaid will be left alone, but effecting across-the-board budget reductions while leaving social programs alone is a continued challenge.
Trump’s decision to hold back military aid to Ukraine also generated controversy. His recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was reportedly unsuccessful, which raised speculation that U.S. support for Ukraine would be reduced under his administration.
Republican Support and Political Divide
While Democratic members of Congress protested, Republican lawmakers began to heavily back Trump during his speech. They stood up often, applauded, and cheered, at times chanting “U-S-A!” when they were in agreement. The positive endorsement reflected the profound political divide between the two sides.
Trump’s address touched on a variety of issues, including the economy, immigration, and national security, but his comments regarding Medicaid reductions and foreign aid generated the most controversy. Republicans, though, were staunchly behind him, maintaining that his policies were needed for economic stability and national interests.
The ousting of Green and the response of both sides demonstrated the increasing tensions in Congress. Democrats are likely to continue resisting Trump’s policies, and Republicans are still intent on seeing his agenda through. As the 2025 political environment is being shaped, these fissures are expected to grow even more intense in the subsequent months.
Green’s protest was a fleeting moment during Trump’s address, but it represented the larger struggle over healthcare, social services, and foreign policy that will continue to shape American politics.
