Earthquake Hits Los Angeles Following Oscars, No Reports of Significant Damage

An earthquake measuring 3.9 occurred in Los Angeles on Sunday evening, minutes following the end of the Oscars. The quake’s epicenter was in North Hollywood, near Burbank, and it was located at a depth of 15.3 km (9.5 miles) beneath the ground.

The earthquake was at 10:13 p.m. PST, with light shaking affecting the region, according to the United States Geological Survey. Luckily, no extensive damage was reported, and the Los Angeles Fire Department assured that it was not going into earthquake mode. Residents from various neighborhoods had reported experiencing tremors, but no major structural damage or injuries were reported.

Effect on Oscar After parties

Despite the fact that the earthquake occurred hours after the ceremony of the Academy Awards ended, most Hollywood celebrities were still celebrating at after parties.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Chappell Roan was at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards view party when the tremor occurred, but its patrons didn’t appear to mind. There were also instances of shaking felt by people attending the Governors Ball Oscars after-party event, but they did not make a scene. There were comments on social media with users citing a sudden lapse in peace but generally continued in an unhindered manner.

Los Angeles is used to minor earthquakes, and most residents, including the celebrities at the parties, did not panic during the incident. Experts maintain that a 3.9 magnitude earthquake is minor, and though it is felt, it does not do any significant damage. Scientists at the USGS also indicated that this earthquake is not necessarily a precursor to a larger one, but they always urge residents to remain prepared.

Recent Disasters in Los Angeles

This earthquake follows on the heels of Los Angeles County experiencing catastrophic wildfires, which claimed 29 lives and scorched almost 57,670 acres of land.

The area has also been struggling with the impact of a massive storm that caused flooding and left people without power.

Most people are still reeling from these disasters, and the earthquake is an added blow. Nevertheless, the emergency services assured the public that there is no need to worry and that they are still monitoring for any possible aftershocks.

At the Oscars, host Conan O’Brien made time to show appreciation for the difficulties that the city had endured and gave firefighters a standing ovation in recognition. He also pointed out the strength of the people of Los Angeles and the value of acknowledging those operating behind the scenes in both movies and rescue work. In spite of recent setbacks, the city keeps on healing and partying for one of its largest entertainment extravaganzas.

The earthquake was a reminder of the natural danger that the region is prone to, but it did not dominate the importance of Hollywood’s grandest night. As always, Los Angeles proves to be resilient, evolving from its changing circumstances while keeping on growing in the entertainment scene.

Officials have reminded the residents to remain ready for any possible earthquakes by anchoring heavy furniture, keeping emergency supplies ready, and familiarizing themselves with safety protocols. Even though this earthquake was insignificant, experts are stressing that Southern California is a seismically active area and that it’s always best to be prepared.
